CharityMania Covid-19 Contingency Plans

The effects of Covid-19 on sporting events and social activities is largely in the past, but we understand that things can change. If for any reason games are postponed or schedules are changed as a result of Covid-19 (or for any other reason), we have contingency plans in place to ensure all game cards still have the same chance to win prize money. Read the details for each game below.

FootballMania Coronavirus Update

The NFL plans to play a full 18 week schedule, but we realize the schedule can change and games can be postponed at any time due to the impact of the coronavirus. Please know that CharityMania has contingency plans in place so that all promised prize money will be paid regardless of any schedule changes. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by schedule changes or postponed or cancelled games. You can raise money with FootballMania confidently regardless of any changes to the schedule.

Contingency plan: Postponed or cancelled games
If individual teams have games cancelled or postponed to a later week in the season, then we will treat those teams as though they have a “bye” in the affected week. We will use the team’s score from the last game in which the team had a score. For example, if the bye occurs in Week 8, then we will use the team’s scores from Week 7.

Contingency plan: League-wide schedule changes
If the NFL adjusts or postpones its schedule, but plans to play all 18 weeks of the season, then we will adjust our schedule accordingly and calculate winners on the new dates provided by the NFL.

Contingency plan: League-wide cancellations
If the length of the NFL season changes and they play fewer than 18 weeks, then we will implement our contingency plan to calculate winners and award prize money during any missed weeks by using the football scores from a random week in a prior season.

The random prior season will be chosen based on the last digit of the Dow Jones Industrial Average at the close of the market on the Monday that we would normally calculate winners for that week. The last digit (the hundredths digit, i.e. to the penny) will represent the year we will use. For example, if the Dow Jones closes at 21350.62 then we will use the number “2” and therefore the 2012 season would be our randomly selected season. Keeping with this example then, if the NFL Week 3 is cancelled, then we would use the Week 3 scores from the 2012 season instead.

FootballMania College Coronavirus Update

College football plans to play a normal, full schedule, but we realize the schedule can change and games can be postponed at any time due to the impact of the coronavirus.

We will use the team’s score from the last game in which the team had a score. For example, if the bye occurs in Week 8, then we will use the team’s scores from Week 7.

Contingency plan: nation-wide schedule changes
If all of college football adjusts or postpones its schedule, but plans to complete its season at a later time, then we will adjust our schedule accordingly and calculate winners on new dates that we will post on the CharityMania website.

Contingency plan: nation-wide cancellations
If the length of the college season changes and they play fewer than 10 weeks, then we will implement our contingency plan to calculate winners and award prize money during any missed weeks by using the football scores from a random week in a prior season (between 2010-2019).

Keeping with this example then, if the FootballMania College Week 3 cannot be played, then we would use the Week 3 scores from the 2012 season instead.

BaseballMania Spring Game Coronavirus Update

Major League Baseball (MLB) is currently playing a full 162 game schedule, but we realize the schedule can change and games can be postponed at any time due to the impact of the coronavirus. Please know that CharityMania has contingency plans in place so that all promised prize money will be paid regardless of any schedule changes. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by schedule changes or postponed or cancelled games. You can raise money with BaseballMania confidently regardless of any changes to the schedule.

League-wide schedule changes
If MLB pauses the season for any reason and then resumes and plays at least 10 weeks, then we will adjust our schedule accordingly and calculate winners based on the new dates provided. If MLB cancels games and plays fewer than 10 weeks, then we will implement our contingency plan and calculate the winners for any canceled weeks by using the scores from a random week in a prior season. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by any schedule changes. All promised prize money will be paid.

Postponed games – individual teams
If games are postponed due to Coronavirus, the affected teams will earn 0 runs for those postponed games during the current week. This means game cards with the affected teams will have a better chance of winning the low score prizes those weeks. If the affected teams play extra games later in the season to make up for the postponed games, the runs scored by those teams will simply count in the new week in which they are played. All runs scored will count in the weeks in which the games are played.

Teams that do not play for a full week
If a team does not play for an entire week during the BaseballMania game, then we will treat their games as normal postponed games (as described above). Game cards with those teams will have a better chance of winning the low score prizes. If 4 or more total teams do not play in a given week, then there is no way to break ties and calculate low score BaseballMania winners (the math just doesn’t work anymore). Therefore, if 4 or more teams do not play in a week, we will implement a contingency plan. For all affected teams, we will use their scores from the last week in which each team had scores. We will treat the teams as though they had a “bye week”, similar to the way we treat bye weeks in our football fundraisers. This ensures all tickets have an equal and random chance of winning prizes.

HockeyMania Coronavirus Update

The NHL plans to play a full season starting in December, but we realize the schedule can change and games can be postponed at any time due to the impact of the coronavirus. Please know that CharityMania has contingency plans in place so that all promised prize money will be paid regardless of any schedule changes. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by schedule changes or postponed or cancelled games. You can raise money with HockeyMania confidently regardless of any changes to the schedule.

League-wide schedule changes
If the NHL pauses the season for any reason and then resumes and plays at least 15 weeks, then we will adjust our schedule accordingly and calculate winners based on the new dates provided. If the NHL cancels games and plays fewer than 15 weeks, then we will implement our contingency plan and calculate the winners for any canceled weeks by using the scores from a random week in a prior season. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by any schedule changes. All promised prize money will be paid.

Postponed games – individual teams
If games are postponed due to Coronavirus, the affected teams will earn 0 goals for those postponed games during the current week. This means game cards with the affected teams will have a better chance of winning the low score prizes those weeks. If the affected teams play extra games later in the season to make up for the postponed games, the goals scored by those teams will simply count in the new week in which they are played. All goals scored will count in the weeks in which the games are played.

HoopsMania Coronavirus Update

The NCAA college basketball national championship tournament is scheduled to begin as normal in March, but we realize that other things can change at any time due to Covid-19. If for any reason the basketball tournament is forced to postpone or cancel games, we have contingency plans in place to ensure that all promised winners and prize money are paid in full. The odds of winning, the amount of prize money awarded, and the overall number of winners will not be affected by any schedule changes or cancelled games.

Rescheduled games
If the NCAA postpones the tournament or reschedules any games, then we will adjust our schedule accordingly and calculate winners after the games are played.

Teams that must forfeit
If an individual team must forfeit a game, then they will receive 0 points for that game and be eliminated from the tournament. Their opponent would be awarded a victory and advance. The winning team will receive points for that game equal to the average number of points that all winning teams in the tournament have scored up through that round. For example, if a team is awarded a victory in Round 4 due to a forfeit, then they would receive the average points that all winning teams have scored through Round 4. If the average points scored by all winning teams through Round 4 was 73 points, then the winning team would get 73 points for that forfeited game.

Tournament stoppage or cancellation
If the tournament begins but is stopped or cancelled before a winner is crowned (i.e. the tournament does not complete all 6 rounds), then we will simply calculate winners based on the total points scored by the teams through the last fully completed round. For example, if the tournament were cancelled sometime during Round 5 (the Final Four), then we would use all the scores accumulated through Round 4 and calculate winners. The odds of winning, the amount of prize money awarded, and the overall number of winners would not be affected.

If the tournament is cancelled before it starts or completes Round 1, then we will calculate the winners by using the teams and scores from a random previous year’s tournament (between 2010 – 2019). To determine the year we will use, we will take the very last digit of the Dow Jones Industrial Average at the close of the market on a day after the tournament cancellation is announced (see website for details at that time). The last digit (the hundredths digit, i.e. to the penny) will represent the year we will use. For example, if the Dow Jones closes at 21350.62 then we will use the number “2” and therefore 2012 as our random tournament year.

GolfMania Coronavirus Update

Professional golf plans to play all 4 majors, but we realize the schedule can change at any time due to the impact of the coronavirus. CharityMania has contingency plans in place so that all promised prize money will be paid regardless of any schedule changes. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected by any schedule changes or postponed or cancelled events. Here are our contingency plans for GolfMania:

Postponed or rescheduled tournaments
If a major tournament is postponed for any reason but played at a later date, we will adjust the GolfMania calendar accordingly and calculate winners and award prize money as normal when the tournament is played. We will update the new dates on our website to match the new tournament dates. GolfMania tickets can be activated up until the new dates before each tournament is played.

Cancelled tournaments
If a major tournament is cancelled, we will implement our contingency plan and use scores from a replacement tournament to calculate winners. We will try to use another (not yet played) major tournament as a replacement. If that is not possible, we will choose an alternate tournament as a replacement and update the website with details. The golfers on the GolfMania game cards that were assigned to the cancelled event will simply be awarded their scores from the replacement tournament. The total number of winners, prize money awarded, and odds of winning will not be affected.

Neil Quinn, PhD

Software Engineering

Neil has a broad background in computer science, education, and entrepreneurship. With his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from University of Southern California, Neil spent the first 30 years of his professional life working as an engineer, eventually founding his own business, Quad-Q Systems.

Specializing in computerized process control systems, Neil’s company created marine mammal life-support systems for Sea World and zoos; medical instrumentation control systems; and air conditioning, heating, and ventilation control systems, among others.

It came as a bit of a surprise to Neil’s friends and family when he decided to return to school and pursue a lifelong passion in the field of ethics and theology. He earned a graduate degree in theology (specializing in business ethics) from the University of Notre Dame and then accepted a job as a professor at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley. While there, Neil taught graduate electrical engineering classes, business ethics classes, helped found the Santa Clara Center for Science, Technology and Society, and was a Presidential Fellow with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

At about this same time, Neil began working with his son, Chris, on a fundraising idea he had to help out their local parish in San Diego. The fundraisers were so successful that Neil and Chris eventually decided to work on them full time… and CharityMania was born. Neil has served as the founder and managing partner of CharityMania since its inception over 25 years ago and is thrilled to be working full time with his son and daughter.

Neil has a BS in Physics from Loyola University, a PhD in Electrical Engineering from USC, and a Masters degree in Theology from Notre Dame University. In his spare time, Neil loves the outdoors and traveling. His latest adventures include walking the Camino de Santiago, and trips to Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Grand Canyon.

CharityMania company history

It all started about 25 years ago when Neil Quinn ran a fundraiser for his local parish and youth group at St. James Catholic Church in San Diego, CA. That fundraiser was essentially what we call FootballMania today. The fundraiser was unique, fun, and raised a lot of money for the parish. Parishioners were excited and sold the tickets to friends and family across southern California.

Some of the FootballMania tickets were sold to members of a Catholic parish located in the Los Angeles area. That parish loved the fundraiser and called St. James to ask how they too could run it. They were told, “You gotta talk to Neil Quinn.” Instead of trying to document and explain all that needed to be done to run FootballMania, Neil offered to donate his time to run it for the parish in Los Angeles as well. They sold thousands of tickets and it was a huge success.

Over the next few years a variety of churches and nonprofit organizations from across the country learned about FootballMania through word-of-mouth and contacted Neil to ask if they could use the fundraiser as well. Neil was completely surprised by the growing interest in his fundraiser, but was also extremely proud that he could help so many organizations raise money and do great things. He didn’t know if he had the time to help every organization that wanted to run FootballMania, but he also felt that he had an obligation to help them if he could. Neil started spending more and more of his time helping run the fundraisers for organizations across the US. He charged a small fee to cover his expenses and time and ran the operations completely out of his home as a small side business. CharityMania was born!

As the business continued to grow rapidly, it was clear Neil could no longer handle the workload by himself. So he brought on his son, Chris, and his daughter, Michele, to work part time. Fast forward to today and now Neil, Chris, Michele, and Michele’s husband, Jeff, are all full time partners at CharityMania and the business continues to grow from the word-of-mouth of happy customers.

We are truly blessed to work for the business we created and are extremely proud that we’ve helped so many great organizations raise so much money for such worthy causes. We pride ourselves on helping organizations do great things, and on providing exceptional personal customer service. We look forward to many more fundraising years in the future!

Overview (2 mins)

FootballMania is an exciting, no-skill necessary sweepstakes based on professional football. All game cards have an equal chance to win prize money based on the performance of the random football teams pre-printed on the back of the cards. Game card holders do not require any skill or knowledge of the sport. You do not pick any of the teams or predict who will win games. All teams are pre-printed on the game cards and have an equal, and random, chance of winning based on the points they score.

FootballMania game cards contain 3 random teams in each of the last 5 weeks of the pro football season (you get 3 new teams each week). A game card's value is equal to the total combined points scored by the 3 teams printed on the card in a given week. Every week, the 65 highest scoring game cards and the 5 lowest scoring game cards all win prizes. There are 4,960 unique game cards in a game, each of which has a minimum 1 in 14.5 chance to win a prize during the season.

If you have a game card, make sure to enter the number on the CharityMania website to see if you are a winner. You do not need to take any action in order to win, but you can play along and have fun tracking your card!

Music Downloads and Sweepstakes Game Cards… a winning combination!

To raise money, you sell CharityMania Tickets (prices between $5 and $25 per ticket) and keep 70% of the money you collect. The CharityMania Ticket (i.e. the stub at the top) contains an access code that allows the buyer to download a fantastic set of digital music from our CharityStudio site. Beneath this ticket, a promotional sweepstakes game card gives the recipient a chance to win $1000s in prize money!

Why sell music downloads? Why not just use the Sweepstakes Game Cards?

There is a legal difference between a sweepstakes and raffle. With a raffle, people pay money for a ticket that gives them a chance to win prizes. Only specific types of organizations can conduct a raffle and most states regulate how the raffles can operate. A sweepstakes is not a raffle. A sweepstakes is a promotion that provides extra incentive for people to buy a product that you are selling. The sweepstakes must have a ‘no purchase necessary’ method of entry. In a CharityMania fundraiser, the Sweepstakes Game Cards are promotion only and are not sold directly. Every time someone buys a CharityMania Ticket, they purchase over $5 to $25 worth of premium music downloads (depending on the price of the CharityMania ticket) from our CharityStudio. The Sweepstakes Game Card is a promotion that provides a great extra incentive for a person to support your cause.

Legally, our Sweepstakes Game Cards work much like the game pieces in the Monopoly sweepstakes® at McDonald’s®. You cannot buy a Monopoly game piece directly. Instead, you purchase things like hamburgers and drinks and receive the game pieces for free. The Monopoly game pieces are promotion.

No purchase necessary sweepstakes tst

All CharityMania sweepstakes are “no purchase necessary”. If someone wants a free Sweepstakes Game Card, they can come to your organization and fill out a request form (provided by CharityMania) to get a free Game Card. They mail their completed request to CharityMania along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and then we will mail the person a Game Card. We do not mail them the music download access code (because they are not paying). This process is very standard for all companies that conduct sweepstakes.

You can sell paper tickets, electronic tickets, or both at the same time with any CharityMania fundraiser. If you sell electronic tickets only, you do not pay any of the printing costs associated with paper tickets (only a $20 setup fee).

With electronic tickets you can raise money from people that are located outside your geographic area with the personalized web page we create for your organization. There are no additional fees and your profit is the same as if you sell paper tickets. It is super simple!
